Employment Trends By the Numbers

  • Job openings for GIS scientists, technicians, and techologists are projected to grow 3-9% from 2010-2020 (US Bureau of Labor Statistics).
  • The job category for "geographer" is poised to increase nearly 30% by 2020 (US Bureau of Labor Statistics).
  • Each of the following career fields are projected to grow by upwards of 15,000 employees between 2008-2018: geographers, geoscientists, cartographers, urban and regional planners, and other geographic professionals (US Department of Labor, 2010).
